AbstractAccording to recent studies in the cognitive sciences, human beings tend to assume that the differences between members of a single species are superficial in comparison with the specie’s essential, shared traits. Nonetheless, individuals that visibly stand out sometimes serve as the basis for assuming wide variations within the species. The way of handling such special cases among the Tozhu in southern Siberia is analyzed in domains that are usually studied separately : shamans, sacred domesticated reindeer, wild species. In all of these, a shared schema of inference leads to considering atypical instances to be an indicator of an individual essence. An explanation is provided of why deviant individuals are supposed to undergo metamorphosis ; and a hypothesis, formulated about the cognitive and environmental properties that have helped spread these traditions in northern Asia.
