Fifteen faculty members teaching in comprehensive private and public universities throughout the United States who had successfully changed fields of specialization within the same universities were intensively interviewed. The lifeworld experiences of these faculty career changers were analyzed systematically according to methods of phenomenological investigation. The investigation revealed that faculty career change was a critical event that led faculty members to experience a new version of professional life--one that moved them toward greater security, growth, and vigor in their respective professions. Six thematic clusters of essential phenomena constituted the process of successful faculty career change revealed; these include: backgrounds and characteristics of the changers; forces and factors that influence the change; a new career choice; factors that support and factors that create barriers to the change; processes of transition; and life after the change. Omission of one of these themes would not permit a thorough understanding of the complete process of successful change. Three patterns of the process of change emerged from this study. These were Institution-Initiated change, Situation-Initiated change, and Self-Initiated change. These patterns were determined through the relative significance of the forces and factors influencing the particular change. The results of the study should prove helpful to various groups of persons involved with career change. These include potential faculty career changers, their families, colleagues, friends, university administrators, etc., particularly faculty development facilitators and adult educators who work with faculty career changers.
