Pathogenic fungi of the genus Alternaria Nees are one of the most common types of pathogens among different plant species. The sustainable use of pesticides under the EU directives leads to the alternative plant protection products. Essential oils – composed form natural volatile compounds obtaining pathogens inhibitory properties. The research carried out in 2017 at the Plant Protection Laboratory of Horticulture Institute, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry. The aim was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) and coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) essential oils on Alternaria spp. pathogens in vitro. Different concentrations of thyme, coriander and lavender essential oils were used for the study: 0 μl l-1, 200 μl l-1, 400 μl l-1, 600 μl l-1, 800 μl l-1, 1000 μl l-1. Thyme essential oil had the highest bio-fungicidal effect and demonstrated the highest inhibition against fungus growth (starting from 200 μl l-1 concentration). The essential oils of lavender and coriander were not so effective as thyme. From the research data we can assume that essential oils can be used as alternative plant protection products, but their proper concentration should be chosen.
