Geraniol is one key bioactive marker compound of the essential oil of geranium, which exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and astringent properties. Taking a dental hydrogel (i.e., a toothpaste) containing geranium essential oil as an example, we develop and successfully validate a method for quantitation of geraniol by gas chromatography with flame-ionization detection. The developed method can be effective for quantitative assays for geraniol and used as a base for developing similar analytical methods for the quality control of final products containing geranium essential oil.
