The Club of Rome, under former industrialist Aurelio Peccei, is about to embark on the next phase of its goal of re-educating mankind to global threats. In its first six reports, beginning with "Limits To Growth" in 1972, the club has sought to explain that the earth is really a very small, compact place and that man's voracious need to exploit its resources could very well ruin it. The latest report, "The Human Gap," is a swing away from Malthusian warnings. It is about educating individuals to think in broad and responsible ways and will be issued in October (C&EN, July 30, page 25). With this report, it appears that the era of ambitious tomes may be over for the club and it will now aim its efforts to grass-roots projects involving the world's youth.
