Isradipine, a new dihydropyridine calcium antagonist with marked vascular selectivity, was given to 17 patients (11 men and six women, average age 56 ± 10 years) with essential hypertension for 12.5 months (range: four to 17 months). All had supine diastolic blood pressure more than 95 mm Hg with 10 mg pindolol once daily. After a short-term, double-blind, dose-finding, crossover comparison with addition of isradipine or placebo twice daily, they continued to receive pindolol and an optimal dose of isradipine in a single-blind, long-term, follow-up study.
