The essential oil content in the leaves and stems of the endemic species Tephrosia persica growing wild in the south of Iran was found to be 0.05% for each based on the fresh weight. The oils were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Twenty and seventeen constituents were identified, which approximately constituted 92.5% and 92.1% of the leaf and stem oils, respectively. The major components of the leaf oil were germacrene D (43.8%), spathulenol (7.5%), caryophyllene oxide (7.0%) and trans-β-caryophyllene (6.8%), while the main components of the stem oil were germacrene D (44.9%), geyrene (6.8%), trans-β-caryophyllene (6.6%) spathulenol (6.5%) and caryophyllene oxide (5.0%).
