The article provides information on the new Ground Water Rule (GWR) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It applies to approximately 147,000 community and noncommunity water systems using groundwater which is not under the influence of surface water. The five general requirements which must be complied by systems subject to GWR are also discussed including periodic sanitary surveys, monitoring of pathogen indicators and treatment techniques. The GWR requires Subpart S systems which notifies the indicator-positive samples to inform the consumers of any deficiencies. Furthermore, the rule also adds fecal-indicant and treatment technique violations entries to Appendix B of Subpart Q.
