A recent study conducted at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, explores the impact of defective centrosome biogenesis on kidney stromal progenitor cell growth and differentiation. The researchers found that the deletion of the Cep120 gene, which is essential for centrosome duplication, resulted in reduced abundance of interstitial lineages in the kidney. This led to small hypoplastic kidneys with medullary atrophy and delayed nephron maturation. Additionally, the loss of Cep120 and aberrant centrosome biogenesis sensitized the kidneys to rapid fibrosis after injury. The study highlights the cellular and developmental defects caused by defective centrosome formation in the embryonic kidney stroma. [Extracted from the article]
