The current work was conducted to determine the chemical composition and to evaluate the possible synergistic interactions on antioxidant and antibacterial activities of two Algerian essential oils (EOs) extracted from Ammodaucus leucotrichus Coss. & Dur. and Artemisia campestris L. singly and in combination between them or with other conventional antioxidant and antibiotics. The chemical composition was analyzed by GC/MS and the antioxidant activity was performed using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Moreover, their antibacterial effect was tested against seven pathogenic strains by using Disc diffusion method and Minimum inhibitory concentrations. The analyses showed that A. leucotrichus EO was dominated by oxygenated monoteprenes represented by perillaldehyde (77.70 %), while A. campestris was mainly composed of spathulenol (27.81 %), (2Z,6Z)-farnesol (19.08 %) and 8-a-acetoxyelemol (10.10 %). Regarding the biological activity, A. campestris EO showed the highest antioxidant activity, while the A. leucotrichus EO exhibited the best antibacterial effect. Afterward, synergistic interactions were observed between EO combinations as well as with synthetic compounds showing significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The overall data suggest that the importance of the synergistic interaction of these EOs could provide exciting potential for application in food and pharmaceutical industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
