A recent study conducted at Southwest University in Chongqing, China, has found that Citrus lemon essential oil (YLK EO) has potent antifungal properties against Penicillium italicum, a major postharvest pathogenic fungus that affects citrus fruit. The study extracted 14 different varieties of domestic citrus peel essential oils and found that YLK EO was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of P. italicum. The researchers identified 40 volatile components in YLK EO, with limonene being the most prevalent. YLK EO treatment disrupted the cell membrane of P. italicum, leading to inhibited spore germination and mycelial growth. The findings suggest that YLK EO could be a potential natural antifungal agent for controlling blue mold in citrus. [Extracted from the article]
