The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the Moroccan Cedarwood essential oil. The sawdust samples ofCedrus atlanticawere collected from Azrou, located in the heart of The Middle Atlas region of Morocco. The plant samples were subjected to hydrodistillation for eight hours. The oils were then analysed by Gas Chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and Gas chromatography coupled with Mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antimicrobial activities were testedin vitroon gram-negative bacteriaEscherichia coliandSalmonella,as well as gram-positiveStaphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilisandBacillus cereususing the agar diffusion assay/aromatogramme and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Three bacterial strains (Escherichia coli,Bacillus subtilisandBacillus cereus) were found to be sensitive to cedarwood essential oil and showed effective bactericidal activity with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 0,4 μl/ml forEscherichia coliandBacillus cereus, and 0,2 μl/ml forBacillus subtilis.
